If you’re wondering about overcoming a fear of flying, this post will tell you everything you need to know. Here you’ll learn why you should get over your fear and do something about it!
In addition, a lot of the information you will be reading and learning is from flight school Van Nuys Ascent Aviation Academy. If you have questions about anything, you can simply reach out to them at any time!
How To Overcome Your Fear Of Flying
So you want to overcome your fear of flying? There are a lot of reasons to do so. That dream vacation you’ve been thinking of. Visiting family and friends wherever they are. New job opportunities. Getting out of Los Angeles for a long weekend. Flying offers you all of these. It’s also extremely easy and convenient, too! There’s just one problem. Your fear of flying. Well, fear no more. It’s not as scary as you might think.
Flying High
A fear of flying is extremely common, almost 20 million Americans suffer from aviophobia, the fear of flying. You are not alone. There are many reasons that people might not want to fly, though the most common is the fear of crashing. How can something so big stay in the air?
Well, it is the safest way to travel. Fact. The chances of anything bad happening are so low that its almost not even worth thinking about. So why waste your time? You have a 1 in 11 million chance of something going wrong. That’s a ridiculously low number. You are 10 times more likely to be struck by lightning and 100 times more likely to be in a major car accident. Just take a look how low the chances really are:
- Winning An Oscar: 1 in 115,000
- Death By Fireworks: 1 in 600,000
- Winning An Olympic Gold Medal: 1 in 680,000
- Drowning In The Bath: 1 in 700,000
- Becoming President: 1 in 10,000,000
- Plane Crash: 1 in 11,000,000
So there you have it, you’ve got a better chance at becoming an Oscar winner or the next President of the United States. If you’re like me, you’ll probably assume that neither of those things will never happen, either. They probably won’t. So why be scared of flying? There really is no good reason to be.
Face The Facts
So now you know the chances are low. Why are they so low? Well it’s not by chance. Flying today is the safest it has ever been, it’s nothing like it was in the early days of commercial pilot training and flight. There’s a huge number of changes and advancements that have happened to make it safe. Nobody wants anything bad to happen, especially the pilots, the airline and the plane manufacturer. Just take a look at why:
Modern Planes: The airplane has much better systems that check themselves and knows somethings wrong long before it’s a problem. Collision avoidance systems will also make sure there’s nothing in front of the plane.
Better Checks: Thorough checks have to be performed before and after every flight, no exception. No plane leaves the ground without being declared safe, no question.
Pilot Training: Pilots must now train harder and longer than ever before. All training and checks are recorded by the federal government, so you know they are the best at what they do.
Ground Control: Better systems on the ground track flights and ensure the plane is safe and on the right heading. In addition, commercial pilot training is excellent and comprehensive. You’re not going to get lost no matter the weather!
Better Business: No aircraft manufacturer wants a bad reputation. Nobody is going to buy an unsafe plane. They have to prove to the government that it is safe and won’t hurt anyone.
Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself
I can talk about how safe it is all day. Which you can see. Very safe. Though the only way to actually overcome your fear is to try it. Take a flight. Even a short one. Nobody can force you onto that plane, though just knowing the exciting trips and memorable moments it will give you should inspire you to overcome your fear. Focus on the positive and take it one step at a time.
If you don’t want to take an 8 hour flight from Los Angeles for your first time, I suggest taking one of the discovery flights that we offer here at Ascent Aviation. This is a great way to overcome your fear of flying, in a controlled environment and see Los Angeles from the air. It’s not just for the birds any more. We here at Ascent Aviation have a top-rated fleet with a 100% safety record, which is as good as it gets. In addition you can get your licensing with us if you decide that flying is for you and you want a private pilot license PPL or anything else!
Once you’ve flown once, you will be planning every trip you can imagine and wonder why you didn’t try it sooner! Flying has given me more memories and experiences than I could ever list here, it’s something I don’t think I could imagine living without.
Helping Hand
If getting over your fear of flying is something that you truly wish to do, then it is in your power. The anxiety can come from a variety of reasons, though embrace it rather than ignore it. You know the facts now, so you know that there really is nothing to worry about.
Book a flight with someone you trust, talk to the people around you on the plane. Knowing that it is safe is only half the battle, the rest is using it to calm yourself, enjoy the view as you soar over Los Angeles and head to new destinations you might not have imagined you’d ever see.
Focus on the end goal, the whole reason that everyone wants to fly, the destinations that are awaiting you, the new and exciting things you will experience and see. There’s nothing you can’t do once you convince yourself that flying is a great option.
It’s Better When You Fly
All these things you’ve seen show that there’s no substance to your fear. Modern day flying is literally the safest way to travel, it offers more opportunities and experiences than you can imagine. If you can dream it, flying can get you there. Safely.
So there you have it. Flying really isn’t anywhere near as scary as you might assume, so there’s no reason not to book a flight today at our Los Angeles flight training academy and start an adventure or visit people you’ve not seen in forever. Overcoming a fear of flying is something that can make your life that much more fun.
We hope this post has been helpful in overcoming your fear of flying and look forward to seeing you in flight!
